Manchester United are eyeing a move for Matthijs de Ligt from Bayern Munich, according to The Athletic.

The Red Devils are keen on bolstering the squad ahead of the new season.

After having their initial €41m (£35m) bid for Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite rejected and their move for Lille defender Jean-Clair Todibo blocked by UEFA, Manchester United are exploring other options to strengthen their defence.

Now it has been claimed that the Red Devils are seriously considering a move to sign Bayern's Matthijs de Ligt, who played under manager Erik ten Hag at Ajax.

It has been suggested that this interest is independent of their ongoing pursuit of Everton's Jarrad Branthwaite.

The Dutch centre-back could bring strength and experience to United's defence.

De Ligt has been a key player for Bayern, but he might be open to a new challenge in the Premier League.

The 24-year-old defender has made 30 appearances for the Bavarian giants this season, including 22 in the Bundesliga, but he has yet to feature for the Netherlands in the ongoing Euro Cup.
